Two bagels were walking down the street...
One was a salted...
The Bagel Deli opened their doors back in 1967. Located on 6439 East Hampden Avenue in south Denver, this little restaurant and bakery has outlived numerous other restaurants in the area. The exterior isn't anything special. In fact, the restaurant is found in a strip mall of all things. However, just as you can't judge a book by it's cover, you can't judge a restaurant by it's location.
This is an extremely popular place so we recommend you go early. They do not take reservations so if you visit during a busy time, you could be in for a wait. It is a small space and tends to get rather loud when filled to capacity; however, that is a minor inconvenience and the quality of the food makes up for it.
While you are waiting to be seated, we recommend taking a look at their bakery. Bagels, pastries, and a variety of traditional Jewish foods are available to purchase. Their deli meat is exceptionally delicious. They cater and can accommodate parties of up to 100 in the restaurant if you prefer to bring the party to them.
The Bagel Deli was featured on an episode of Food Network's, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. In fact, you can order the exact same dish that Guy Fieri tried which is always fun.
The wait staff were very busy so they weren't as conversational as other places we have visited, but we couldn't blame them for that. They are willing to bring you samples if you ask them to and they offer gluten free options as well.
All the food was delicious. We ordered both a plain and everything bagel with butter and cream cheese. It's amazing how much better fresh made bagels and cream cheese taste when you are used to only store bought varieties. From the breakfast menu, we ordered the Lox Bagel with Hollandaise, the Eggs Bagel-Dict, and the Blintzes. We also tried the Corned Beef sandwich with a pumpernickel bagel, and the Triple D Sampler consisting of Matzo Ball Soup, Meat Knish (a filled pastry dough), and a Kishke (similar to a stuffing in a delicious broth). The sandwich was our favorite and for the money, you get a very generous amount of lunchmeat.
For dessert we chose the raspberry, apricot, cinnamon, and chocolate Rugulah (a type of mini struesel). We also tried the cheese struesel and chocolate Baklava. The Baklava was a little dryer than we are used to but was quite tasty. The final items from the dessert menu were a chocolate and a cinnamon Babka (a type of pastry).
The Bagel Deli is reasonably priced, offers a wide variety of food choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We award the Bagel Deli a fork and is definitely worth a try. Thank you all for a great time.
