Forest Room 5

Forest The Love of Pete!!!

Getting There

Forest Room 5 is in located the very popular Highlands area of Denver.  They do not have their own parking lot; however, the street parking is free so no need to worry about those pesky parking meters.  Finding the place is very straightforward and although they don’t have a huge sign out front, it is hard to miss the trees and the forest setting in the middle of the sleek and trendy bars, restaurants, and boutiques of the area.

The Atmosphere

Forest Room 5 is above all else, a bar.  It is best summed up as an “industrial cabin” and looks as though David Bowie had a baby with Paul Bunyon.  The booths are tree trunks with padded seats and wooden benches with backrests made of padded flannel.  The tables are made of massive slabs of wood and add to the eclectic, rustic feel.  There is a small eating area in the main room by the elaborate bar.  Behind the bar is a large movie screen that shows beautiful scenic views, colorful sunsets, and at one point a front row seat showing two Grizzly bears getting cozy, if you know what I mean.  The bartender’s dogs wandered in and out of the bar and patio area casually greeting each visitor as they walked in.  This may be off putting to some; however, it seemed to add to the atmosphere of the bar.  We felt like we were at a watering hole up in the Colorado Rockies.

The centerpiece of Forest Room 5 is the patio area.  They have managed to bring the mountains to the city.  There is a stream running through the patio, fire pits, tables, and beautiful lighting when it gets dark.  An interesting and beautiful setting to meet a group of friends for drinks and good conversation.

The Eats

Because it is a bar, we decided to get a couple of the specialty drinks listed on the menu.  First we ordered The Grizzly.  This is made with cazadores blanco, apricot and cayenne simple, and grapefruit spritzer.

We also tried their Bear Heaven which is a mix of whipper snapper Oregon whisky, St. Germain, lemon juice, fresh thyme, and bitters on the rocks. One thing we can say about Forest Room, they don't skimp on the drinks.  They were...pungent.

We started with the Smoky Mac and Cheese.  Cheesy and filling this was tasty beginning to our evening.  It was made with roasted mushrooms, gouda, and bacon.  The bacon mixed well with the smoky, creamy gouda and instead of the typical elbow macaroni, this was a cavatappi pasta (corkscrew shape).  The sundried tomatoes added s sweet, chewy texture and rounded the dish out nicely.

We also tried the Green Garlic Soup made with achiote creama, fresh garlic, and fire popped heirloom corn.  This was creamy and had an intense garlic flavor that paired well with the sweetness of the corn.

The Smoked Bison Tacos were tasty and straightforward consisting of shredded bison seasoned perfectly with corn salsa and red onions all tucked away in soft flour tortillas.

Herbed Truffled French fries are all the rage right now and that is why we ordered them at Forest Room 5.  These were served with shaved parmesan cheese and  truffle aioli.  The fries were very fresh, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.  The aioli was not our favorite but was adequate for a truffle sauce found in a bar setting.

Our most unique find was without a doubt, the Grilled Watermelon Salad.  Slices of Watermelon were grilled briefly to form an almost carmelized coating on the outside while preserving the chilled, juicy melon on the inside.  It was served with both honeydew and cantaloupe melon balls, feta cheese, pistachios, and fresh arugula.  It was then drizzled with a fresh arugula sauce.  We would never have thought to mix melon with arugula but the flavors meshed perfectly and made for a light, whimsical salad.

We decided to try the fried chicken off the large plate portion of the menu.  The chicken had a very good coating, crunchy and crispy without drying out the chicken itself.  The meat was juicy and flavorful.  It was served with a light summer slaw, puffed wheat, and fresh honeycomb.

The flat iron steak was served with grilled baby vegetables, farro ( a type of grain), roasted carrots, and mushrooms.  This was simply prepared with no fancy sauces or glazes.  As with many items at Forest Room, this had a distinct smoky flavor to it.

Duck Confit is a favorite with us at MenuManiacs and we were a little surprised to find this on the menu in this type of setting so we just had to give it a try.  We were surprised at how good it was.  It was fall off the bone tender, served with an arugula, feta and goat cheese, pistacio, and strawberry salad.

The last item we tried was the bison short ribs.  These were served with fry bread, baked new potatoes, and wild asparagus.  This was served with an unctuous sauce that was basically the drippings from the meat.  This was another table favorite.  The meat had the texture of a pot roast and was very succulent.

On to desserts.  First, the dark chocolate brownie served with spruce tip and smoked peanuts.  This was an extremely rich and extremely dark chocolate brownie that had the texture of a flourless dessert.  So much so that we were unable to finish it.

We also tried the S'mores.  Smoked marshmallows, graham cracker crumble, and dark chocolate.  This was a tasty dessert as a whole; however, the graham cracker crumble was the star of the dish.  It was more like a cookie than a graham cracker and was delicious when dipped into the chocolate.

The People

As we stated, Forest Room 5 is a bar.  That being said, when you visit them don't expect stellar service.  The employees are basically bartenders and really cannot be compared to the wait staff at fine dining establishments.  Our server Roxy was helpful and kept our food coming and our drinks full.

Summing Up

Forest Room 5 gets its name from the 5 large rooms you can reserve for larger parties.  They are set up for live entertainment and dining service.  Call if you have interest in booking these for a get together or office party.

They have options for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free items on their menu.  They have a nice, varied menu and offer something for everybody.

Forest Room 5 is a nice little bar with a unique setting in a very popular part of the city.  A good place for friends to get together after work for a drink.  Because of this, we award Forest Room 5 a fork.

Thank you for a truly unique dining experience.

Breakfast on Broadway

We Aren't Yolking, They Are Eggcellent!

Breakfast on Broadway is well known to breakfast enthusiasts in the Denver area.  It has been around for quite a while and in addition to breakfast, BOB has a pretty impressive lunch menu as well.

Getting There

Located at 2901 South Broadway in Englewood, Breakfast on Broadway is easy to find since there is a large sign out in the parking lot.  Seriously, it's the place with the giant spatula.  We aren't joking.  It's huge.

Anyhoo, there is a lot of free parking and even a special section for bikes and motorcycles.  That way, you don't have to experience the joy of finding a free spot only to feel intense disappointment a second later when you see a Harley has already claimed it.

The Atmosphere

The restaurant has a warm, light, and fun atmosphere.  The walls sport earthy tones and are covered with both murals and black and white nostalgic photos of old time Denver including the Majestic, the Gothic, and old Broadway.  The restaurant is not an overly large space but they do have plenty of tables, booths, and even bar seating.  They offer a good sized patio for those who prefer to dine outside.

The Eats

One of us took advantage of the bottomless Mimosas...and they mean bottomless.  As soon as a quarter of the glass was empty, the server would swoop in like an orange juice ninja and fill that champagne flute to the brim which was pretty awesome.

We started off with the homemade donut holes.  These were dusted with powdered sugar and served with cream cheese frosting as well as a beautiful strawberry sauce.  The donuts themselves were crispy on the outside and cakey on the inside.  The strawberry sauce was amazing because it was straightforward and simple.  It wasn't overly sweet and allowed you to taste the true flavor of the strawberry.  Definitely our favorite sauce for this breakfast appetizer and yet another lesson to us that something doesn't have to be fancy to be delicious.

We ordered several dishes and sides so we will list what we ordered and what we thought of each item.

Per our server Kara's recommendation, we ordered the Broadway Breakfast - two eggs any style, potato cakes, choice of bacon, turkey bacon, patty sausage, or taylor ham and served with your choice of toast, biscuit or pancakes (we opted for the Strawberry Romanoff Pancakes).

We also ordered Corned Beef Hash - grilled, crisp, topped with two eggs your style and their hollandaise sauce with your choice of toast or pancakes (we chose the Butternut Squash Pancakes for this dish).

W.P.K.'s Irish Oatmeal was also selected - served risotto style.  This came with a tray of extras:  brown sugar, pecans, granola, and raisins.  We also chose the sourdough toast with the oatmeal.

In addition, we tried a side of jalapeno bacon, biscuits and gravy, and their patty sausage.

The sides of bacon and patty sausage were wonderful.  Both were cooked perfectly and had excellent flavor.  The bacon was crisp without being burnt.  The sausage patties were tasty without being overly spicy.  Even our non-sausage eater finished the patty she was given and believe me, that is saying something.

The jalapeno bacon was one of our favorites, but this does have a kick to it.  You have been warned.  The bacon was cooked with jalapenos on the top and was a great combination of salty, spicy, and meaty.  We imagine it would be excellent with their breakfast burrito or huevos rancheros.

Eggs.  Two over easy.  Very simple but exceptional.  Fried eggs are best with crispy edges and these were a little pocket of heaven.  The yolk was not hard and have I mentioned the crispy edges?

The sourdough toast was great as well.  Not over toasted and simply buttered.

Biscuits and gravy are typically a staple order when we visit a breakfast restaurant.  Their biscuits were large and fluffy without being doughy and the velvety gravy had a good flavor with only a hint of sausage.  This was a little unusual since most gravies we have tried tend to be the opposite with sausage being the star of the dish.  Overall, we really enjoyed Breakfast on Broadway's take on the classic biscuits and gravy.

Irish oatmeal is a favorite with us.  Especially since 1/2 of the MenuManiac team is of Irish descent.  We always prefer this type of oatmeal due to the texture of steelcut oats as opposed to the rolled oats most people are used to (think instant oat meal).  The fact that they cooked the oatmeal risotto style really made a difference because it was not overly thick but not too thin or watery.  Also, they offered several options ON THE SIDE.  On the side is very big with us (think When Harry Met Sally).  These included pecans, brown sugar, raisins, granola, and a creamer full of milk.  We used the brown sugar and pecans and it was fantastic!  We liked this dish so much that it was the last to leave the table and that was only after prying it from our hands after distracting us with a pretty color.

The Strawberry Romanoff Pancakes were buttermilk pancakes topped with marinated strawberries and brown sugar cream cheese.  We were pleased to see that Breakfast on Broadway serves smaller sized pancakes which means less for us to waste (or eat, let's be honest).  These were really tasty.  The buttermilk pancakes were rich, fluffy, and decadent.  The strawberries were fresh and tasty and the brown sugar cream cheese butter was sweet enough to negate the need for maple syrup.  It would make an excellent dessert!

Butternut Squash Pancakes, people!  The surprise dish of the morning.  These were a completely different consistency and texture than the strawberry pancakes.  They were very similar to the texture of French toast and because of the cinnamon and nutmeg, it had a nutty flavor with spices similar to a pumpkin bread.  These were served with a maple butter that again erased any need of syrup to be added.  We loved these pancakes!

We also tried the Corned Beef Hash.  This was served with two scrambled eggs and hollandaise sauce on the side.  The mark of good Corned Beef Hash is when it is crispy on the outside and creamy in the center.  This was a perfect hash.  Neither of us is a fan of hollandaise sauce typically, but this sauce really brought out the flavor of the hash and it really surprised us.  The hollandaise was not as lemony as others we have tried and was very delightful.

Breakfast on Broadway's potato cakes were a cross between mashed potatoes and hash browns.  They were lightly fried on each side and were seasoned well with little to no filler.  All potato.  Totally delicious.

The People

Our server, Kara was a delight.  She was bubbly and attentive.  This is not easy when you are in such a busy restaurant.  We asked her for suggestions when ordering and she didn't skip a beat.  We ordered everything she recommended and we loved every dish.  We were a little disappointed that she did not provide anybody to rub our full tummies like our moms used to do, but we will let that one slide.  Seriously, if you can request Kara as your server do so.  She is just delightful.

Summing Up

Breakfast on Broadway is an extremely busy restaurant.  They do not take reservations; however, they do offer call ahead seating and they honor that even when there is a crowd.  If you have to wait, complimentary coffee and water as well as reading materials are offered.  The only negative we saw during the whole experience was the fact that they do not have much of a waiting area.  There was a large crowd waiting to be seated outside so if it's a hot summer or cold winter, you could be in for a long wait.

They offer an espresso bar menu as well as a night shift happy hour between the hours of 7 to 9am that offers bottomless J Roget Mimosas and 2 for 1 Svedka Bloody Marys.

The restaurant is very reasonable and for the price, you get huge portion sizes.

We gave Breakfast on Broadway the coveted Golden Spoon.  They offer a lot of food at a great value and their food is very, very good.

Thank you to Kara and the staff of BOB for a wonderful and surprising Sunday morning breakfast.  We will be back for lunch very soon.

Hideaway Steakhouse

Hiding away in Westminster

Getting There

Contrary to the restaurant's name, The Hideaway Steakhouse is not difficult to find.  Located on West 112th Ave just east of Federal, this upscale restaurant offers ample parking and a large, hard to miss sign out front.

The Atmosphere

As soon as you walk through the front door, you know you are in a special place.  The decor is a beautiful balance of natural and contemporary textures and refined features.  In addition to the natural stone that graces the floors and the sleek lighting fixtures, the seating options are lovely.  Booths form alcoves that provide diners with a wonderful sense of privacy.  Hideaway Steakhouse offers seating in their amazing dining room as well as a full bar complete with bar and table seating.  In addition, they have an amazing outdoor patio that faces an open space allowing patrons to enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather.

The Eats

I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "Start each meal with liquor."  Well, maybe not; however, we sure did.  Turner, our amazing server, suggested the Manhattan for our Whisky connoisseur and for our wine lover, he suggested a beautiful glass of some really tasty red.  What a wonderful way to start an evening!  As our drinks were served, Turner regaled us with interesting facts and stories about the restaurant and its history.

In an incredibly kind and unexpected gesture, the owner of the establishment brought us an amuse bouche to start off the night.  This was a beautifully presented piece of fresh, buffalo mozzarella wrapped in salmon and served on an ultra thin slice of cucumber.  It was then drizzled with balsamic vinegar and garnished with fresh radish sprouts.  What an amazingly fresh and light way to "amuse the mouth"!

From the menu, we chose the Beef Tenderloin Wrapped Enoki. The Enoki mushrooms served several purposes for this dish.  First as a delicious, meaty compliment to the delicate tenderloin, and second as the handle for dipping the entire thing into the spicy aioli.

Next we tried the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes.  We are huge fans of crab and we find crab cakes are a good indicator of things to come.  If the crab cakes are good - meaning lots of crab and adequate seasoning and fillers - we know the establishment cares about what they serve.  If the crab cakes are not good - meaning more breading and seasoning than crab - well, you know the rest.  Let's just say that these crab cakes were REALLY good.  Plenty of meat and lots of flavor.

The Roasted Tomato, Corn, & Chicken chowder was our last choice for an appetizer.  According to Turner, this soup started out as an occasional soup de jour; however, due to it's popularity, the restaurant had to add it to the menu as a permanent option.  It was incredible.  Actually, it was our favorite appetizer.  The chowder was hearty and flavorful.  Large pieces of chicken and tomato mixed with spices and had just a hint of sweetness from the fresh, crispy corn.  This was just so good!

Being the meat eaters we are, we selected the 18oz Cowboy Bone-In Ribeye,  Blackened Nieman Ranch Bone-in Pork Chop and the 12 oz Boneless Buffalo Ribeye from the list of specials.

The buffalo was served with a mixture of seasonal vegetables and smoked gouda-bacon new potatoes.  While the steak was delicious, the potatoes were the highlight of the dish.  Cheesy and decadent, the potatoes were the perfect pairing to the lean cut of buffalo.
The beef ribeye was well prepared and served al a carte as most of Hideaway's steak offerings are.  The steaks offered at The Hideaway Steakhouse are aged for 21 days utilizing a wet aging process to enhance flavor and texture.  The seasoning on the ribeye was not overpowering and would definitely be able to stand on its own without the need for any sauces or additions.  We added a bearnaise sauce, crab oscar, and shrimp scampi as well as a family-style side of creamed spinach.

The creamed spinach was delicate and lightly dressed in a rich cream sauce and the shrimp was fresh and flavorful.

Our favorite dish of the evening was the pork chop.  Thick cut with a perfect sear on the outside, and a moist interior.  This was a blackened chop, and thankfully it was not overly seasoned as blackened dishes often are.  The chop had just the right amount of seasoning and spice to make each bite delicious.  It was served  with parmesan asparagus, saffron rice, and pineapple chutney salsa.  The asparagus was supple yet didn't lose its snap and the parmesan added a creamy, rich flavor that elevated this simple offering to a very delightful side dish.  The rice had a really interesting flavor profile that we still don't quite know how to describe without using the common phrase of "yummy".  The pineapple chutney made a great counterpoint to the pork and added a delightful, tropical twist.  What is it about pork and pineapple?  Delicious.

Dessert at The Hideaway Steakhouse was somewhat of a spiritual event.

The special for the evening was a Red Velvet Cheesecake. In addition we selected the Creme Brulee, Pumpkin Pineapple Carrot Cake, and Nutella Phyllo Triangles. Yes you read that correctly, Nutella!

The phyllo triangles were similar to baklava in texture.  Phyllo dough was filled with nutella, fried, and drizzled with chocolate sauce.  They were just warm enough to keep the nutella slightly melted and were simply amazing.  The ice cream served with these triangles was a simple vanilla but partnered well with the triangles.  Although most of us where perfectly happy just eating the phyllo.

The Cheesecake was made in classic New York style with the addition of cocoa.  However, not too much cocoa to make it a true chocolate cheesecake but not too little to lose the delicate chocolate flavor.  Rich and dense, this cheesecake could easily be a dessert for two.

The Creme Brulee was your typical creamy custard topped with a thin, perfectly caramelized sugar.

Last but certainly not least was the Pumpkin Pineapple Carrot Cake.  It was sweet, spicy and warm. Truly like an autumn evening by the fire.  This was topped with ice cream and slightly tart apple slices.  We were surprised by this dessert since pumpkin, pineapple, and carrot does not seem like a likely combo; however, it was a wonderful find.

The People

We cannot say enough about our server, Turner.  He was definitely one of our favorite servers to date.  He was attentive, knew the menu like the back of his hand, and was completely capable of handling all the crazy we tend to bring as a group.  It truly is a gift finding people who are so caring and interested in ensuring we have the best possible experience.  He not only introduced us to the owner of the restaurant but also the chef.  When one of us got up to use the powder room, he offered his hand to help her out of the booth and walked with her to show her where the facilities were.  Such a simple act is so memorable and unusual in this day and age.  He truly is an awesome guy.  Thank you so much, Turner for such a wonderful, interesting, and informative evening.  You are awesome!

Summing Up

We enjoyed our visit to The Hideaway Steak House very much.  The items are quite pricey but the service and ambiance made up for it.  If you have a special occasion to celebrate or if you are looking to impress a loved one, we recommend The Hideaway.

They offer incredible happy hour deals as well as live music in the bar area.

For a wonderful evening, we give The Hideaway Steakhouse a fork.

JaJa Bistro

They're Saucy!

Although JaJa Bistro has been open for eight years, we just discovered it earlier this month. Spoiler Alert! It was AWESOME!!

Getting There

JaJa Bistro is fairly easy to find.  It is located in downtown Littleton just off Main St and Nevada.  There is a dedicated parking area next to the restaurant and a pay lot less than a block away.

The Atmosphere

Walking in the front door of JaJa Bistro is like going over to a friend's house for dinner.  The restaurant is a beautifully renovated house and contains quaint touches like the original woodwork and small, intimate spaces.  Wonderful French music plays in the background adding to the charming atmosphere.  They advertise JaJa as a "casual French eatery" which is spot on.  The décor is relaxed with a little bit of whimsy and fun.

The Eats

Oh, how we love Denver Restaurant Week!  We were surprised to find that JaJa Bistro had extended their Denver Restaurant Week menu.  This allowed us to sample more of their cuisine than we expected.  We just love it when a plan comes together.

We began our meal with fresh French bread served with butter that was sprinkled with paprika and sea salt.  It's amazing how something as subtle as paprika can add so much flavor to something so common as butter and salt.

We started with the bacon wrapped apple stuffed dates appetizer.  This was a surprising dish.  Since none of us at the table could remember eating an actual date before, we were not sure what to expect.  They were amazing.  They had a creamy, sweet, and chewy texture and we liked how the flavors meshed.  In addition, the presentation was beautiful.

The marinated confit garlic and olives were excellent.  We found them to be mild and not overly garlicky.  They played off each other well by picking up flavors from each other.  Both the garlic and the olives spread easily on the bread served with the appetizer.  It was toasted with fennel, and drizzled with balsamic vinegar.  The dish had a nice salty and sweet flavor that we really enjoyed.

We also ordered the flavoured fries with rouille sauce.  Given the choice between truffle or walnut oil, we chose the truffle oil.  The fries were crispy, salty, and in addition to being cooked with truffle oil, they were sprinkled with parsley.  These were incredible.  The truffle oil added a new dimension of flavor and the dipping sauce was very similar to mayonnaise.  This was a very large serving and was one of our favorite appetizers.

The soup de jour was a creamy potato leek soup.  For those unfamiliar with leeks, they have a mild onion flavor and they provided a milder flavor that would be lost if a strong onion would have been used.  It was finished with a sundried tomato olive oil drizzle which added an extra zing of flavor that we did not expect.

The house salad or salade maison was incredibly fresh consisting of crispy greens, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, red pickled onions, and drizzled with a vinaigrette dressing.

Our next choice was the Charcuterie plate.  This consisted of duck liver mousse terrine, dry cured meats, confit grapes, cornichons, olives, and onion marmalade.  These meats were served with the same toasted bread we had with the confit olives and garlic.  We enjoyed this dish, especially the onion marmalade.

If there is one thing that sets JaJa apart from other restaurants we have tried, it is their amazing sauces. Although sauces are a staple in French cuisine, compared to other French establishments, JaJa Bistro is the master of sauciness.  No kidding, people.  They are amazing.

First ordered was a dish called Millefeuilles d'Aubergies.  There was much debate at the table as to whether we should try this dish at all because it contains eggplant.  Eggplant is just one of those vegetables you either love or hate.  However, since the main reason for starting this blog was to try new things, we reluctantly decided to give it a go.  It consisted of slices of breaded eggplant layered with roasted chicken and topped with a creamy parmesan sauce.  This was complimented by baby carrots and squash.  The chicken was shredded and well seasoned, no knives necessary to dig into this one. The parmesan sauce was truly the front and center of the dish.  Parmesan is a very strong cheese so it had a very deep and rich flavor that brought all the elements together.  The dish was a tasty revelation.  While we're not ready to say we love eggplant, we can say that we really liked this meal.

JaJa's Pork Porterhouse was a very large portion of a wonderful cut of pork.  This was hands down the favorite dish of the evening.  It was served with grattine potatoes which were cooked to perfection.  This sauce was astonishing.  Although some of us at the table were not fans of Dijon mustard, it was such a fantastic accompaniment to the pork that we could not get enough of it.

The unexpected find for the night was the Trout Almondine.  Nobody attending this dinner was a fan of fish, especially trout.  In fact, childhood traumas had kept one of us from eating trout for the last fifteen years.  That being said, everybody loved this dish.  The way this dish was cooked was a miracle.  It was not fishy but flaky and came off the bone clean.  Cooked with an almond butter, the trout was coated perfectly and tasted fantastic.  This dish was served with brussel sprouts, green beans, and kale.  Absolute perfection!

As you all know, we here at MenuManiacs live for steak so we just had to try the steak frites au poivre.  This was a petite shoulder tender served with a velvety peppercorn sauce, roasted potato, and butter poached portabello mushrooms.  No complaints here. The steak was a good portion, juicy, and delicious.  Peppercorns and steak go hand in hand so we knew this would be an excellent choice.

For dessert, we tried most of the menu as it is our way.

There are a few "go-to" desserts out there for us and Tiramisu is one of them.  We know tiramisu isn't a french dessert but JaJa's  presentation of it will have you thinking magnifique. Served in a cappuccino cup, this layered dessert was fresh and creamy and was adorned with an ample layer of cocoa.

Aside from tiramisu, we tend to order crème brulee whenever possible.  It is one of our favorites and although a fairly simple dish, we are surprised how many places get this one wrong.  Not JaJa.  We left dinner that night knowing we had found the best vanilla bean crème brulee to date.  This was a perfect custard with a thin layer of carmelized sugar, not burnt or too thick or hard to get through.  It was served with a beautiful twill cookie of spun sugar that was a tasty and fun garnish to this light and playful dish.

The berry tartlet was served on a flaky pastry alongside goat cheese and fresh whipped cream.  This was a nice dish.  Admittedly, we are not fans of goat cheese due to the strong flavor; however, this was a wonderful and light way to end a meal.

Next up was the chocolate mousse.  A decedent dark chocolate confection topped with fresh berries. The balance of dark chocolate and light airy cream made every spoonful resplendent.  Absolutely heavenly!

Our favorite dessert of the evening was a frozen honey mousse with homemade raspberry compote.  The mousse itself was delicate and light with a subtle honey sweetness.  Because it was frozen, it had the texture of gelatto.  The raspberry compote was the perfect companion to the mousse and at the bottom of the cup was a glorious reservoir of honey.  We loved this dessert so much that we ordered a second helping.  Not only because of it's originality but also because we were not expecting such a lovely, whimsical dessert.

The thing we enjoyed about all JaJa's desserts was the wonderful garnishes.  Fresh berries and fresh whipped cream were a part of each dish.

Also, the coffee served at JaJa is our favorite restaurant coffee thus far.  It is served in a French press and is absolutely astounding!

The People

We admit it.  Sometimes, we tend to be a server's nightmare.  We promise it is not intentional, but we do ask a lot of questions regarding the menu.  As a group, we ask about ingredients, the history of the restaurant, add-ons, substitutions, food allergies, information about the owners, the chef, and the staff.  Also, we were so disorganized for this dinner.  Since all of us were arriving separately and not in a group,  it took us an entire hour to assemble our party.  Our server, Patrick was patient and courteous throughout the evening.  He checked on us at regular intervals as our party wandered in.  Although we did manage to stump him a couple times, he admitted to not knowing the answers and  returned with the information rather than making something up.  Integrity goes along way with us.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Janelle who is half of the Poullier husband/wife team that own JaJa Bistro.  She was delightful, energetic, and upbeat with a relaxed happy smile.  She came by to check on us and to take away some of our empty plates.  She was gracious and took the time to really talk to us.  Once again, a highly valued trait in an owner or manager.  Before we left, Janelle came by again with her husband, Chef Stephan.  He was kind, down to earth, and engaging.  Not many chefs come out to chat, so it was such a special treat for us.  Janelle, Chef Stephan, Patrick and the whole staff of JaJa Bistro were so welcoming and kind that they have made us patrons for life.  We love you guys!

Summing Up

Chef Stephan serves dishes from his childhood in the south of France.  They change their menu as the season's change so there are plenty of good dishes to try.

Of course, we gave JaJa Bistro the coveted golden spoon because of the excellent menu, staff, atmosphere, and experience.

Once again, we thank Janelle, Stephan and the entire staff of JaJa Bistro for a wonderful and unforgettable dining experience.
